Glasnevin Family Practice

Dr. Dualtach Mac Colgain

I have lived in the area for many years and was very happy to join Glasnevin Family Practice in July 2021. The practice is very well organised and provides an excellent standard of care across a wide range of sub-specialties within general practice, something that is very appealing to both patients and clinicians alike.

Prior to becoming a doctor, I qualified as a physiotherapist and competed for Ireland in sailing at World and European Championship level. These experiences have allowed me to foster an inherent interest around health, exercise and wellbeing. I try to incorporate these interests into my practice as a GP, where possible.

Health promotion played a big part in my GP training and preventative medicine plays a key role in my care for patients. I believe that this begins from birth all the way through life. Paediatric medicine has always interested me; fostering good behaviours around health and wellbeing in children in a fun and creative way is a great way to prevent illness from an early age. Management of long-term illness in our elderly patients can be challenging at times but very rewarding all the same. The introduction of chronic disease management is an initiative that is very beneficial to our more aged patients and will offer them an improved quality of life. This also transfers well to my care of our patients that are resident in nursing homes.

Having worked across multiple sporting disciplines at all levels and currently with the Meath Senior Gaelic Football and Dundalk FC teams as their team doctor, I have developed a particular interest is in the assessment and management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. These skills compliment my work as a GP and play an integral part in the day to day care of my patients.
